Minimum Salaries for Postdoctoral Scholars

Effective July 1, 2016, the minimum salary for newly hired and renewed appointments for postdoctoral scholars (including postdoctoral research associates, postdoctoral fellows and postdoctoral teaching fellows) will be $43,692 (12 months).

However, effective December 1, 2016, in accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor’s final rule updating salary and compensation regulations, the minimum annual salary for postdoctoral scholars will be set at $47,476. This minimum salary applies to all current and newly appointed postdoctoral scholars on or after December 1, 2016. For details, please visit the USC Postdoc Admin Resource website.

For all new and renewed postdoctoral scholar appointments, the category of postdoctoral fellow may only be used if an external sponsor requires appointment as a student.  Evidence must be provided to the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs to demonstrate that a student appointment is required. The category of postdoctoral fellow may not be used for newly appointed and renewed scholars paid from unrestricted university funds.
